The students, professors and staff of my institute, IISc Bangalore, were full of energy, as they were going participate and witness in first ever Triathlon competition at our own lush green campus.
The IISc Triathlon Championship 2014, organized by IISc Swimming Club, IISc Gymkhana, was very well received by the institute community and saw unexpected number participating teams in both individual and team category including boys and girls to 50+ years young enthusiastic athlete. The event is vowed to be a stepping stone towards organizing a “ScienceMan” competition, on the lines of IronMan–Triathlon for the people involved in science at various institutes/research labs through-out the country.
Lalitha K V, a PhD Student at the institute, was only participant individual women category and successfully completed the all three tasks of Swimming for 0.5km, Cycling for 18 km and Running for 6 kms in 1 hour 50 minutes 48 seconds, while Prof Murali Krishna won the men’s competition in individual category with a gross timing of 1 hour 27 minutes 55 seconds followed by Bhargava and Navin at 2nd and 3rd places with the timings of 1.34.00 hours and 1.37.08 hours respectively among 9 participants.
The team event had neck to neck competition, as the team of Casper, Shome and Shamik took just 2 minutes 6 seconds quicker than the team of Subhashish, Phanibhushan and Divyanshu, who finished second with a gross timing of 1 hour 13 minutes 40 seconds. Gaurav, Abhijit and Arvind’s team was at the 3rd place among a total of 34 teams who finished as clock ticked for 1.19.40 hours .
It was first of it’s kind of event at the premier research institute of our country, which involved not only Swimming Club but also Athletics Club and IISc Bikers Network in planning and organizing the competition. The event would not have been possible without the support of volunteers and the supporters of participants added a star on the event.
I could see this event as really good team building activity as people with various interests came together to form teams, which is a rare sight at the institute. It was really good see the supporters of the teams cheering till the end, cyclists pacing their partners towards the end of run, etc.
Finally, 3 cheers for the event organizers, Akash Sonawane (IISc UG), Anshul Mittal (MSc(Engg) Student at CPDM) and Divyanshu Joshi aka DJ (PhD Student at CPDM), along with numerous volunteers who worked tirelessly to such a flawless organization of the event.
