Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has been organising Open Day for the past three years. IISc, the India’s Premier Research Institute, opens the doors for general public, specially for the students from different schools and colleges.
Walk through IISc
from 9:00AM to 5:00PM on Saturday, 2nd March, 2013
The research labs across the institute are open for public to see the activities and get inspired from the work carried out there. The research work is explained through simple demos and live experiments. This technological fair, which consists of the exhibitions/demonstrations/seminars by departments/centres, is expected to ignite an inquisitive spark in the young minds towards a carrier in scientific research.
I guess, like every year, this year also High Voltage Laboratory, Department of Electrical Engineering, is going to be hot destination for the visitors to witness their artificial lightening created through high voltage discharge in the laboratory. But, I am sure the demo of “KONARK” 3D Printer, will draw a lot eyeballs as well. The KONARK, designed by Nitin and Jince (Students) of CPDM, IISc Bangalore, will be demonstrated in exhibition at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing, which is the first department on the right hand side after entering the institute through Security Gate aka 2nd Gate or ATM Gate on CV Raman Avenue.
Apart from KONARK, getting a 3D Image of yourself would be interesting activity at the SCALE Lab of CPDM, while the CAR Lab, i.e. Creative Automotive Research Laboratory, will show off the power of testing strong automotive components such as steel hat-sections to soft materials like foam for low velocities in the range of 1mm/sec to high velocities of more than 200 m/sec.
I never seen any other lab in the institute in the last 3 editions of Open Day, so I am planning to go out to see, what my fellow research scholars are doing. However, I request you all to visit CPDM and get inspired yourself about the product design and the processes involved. I hope you will be able to connect yourself to the products demonstrated by the students, especially by M.Des students, who has got very good feedback from the visitors including personalities from who came to delivers talks during Ripples’13 (28th Feb-1st March).
Hope you will have fun!!! Cheers 🙂
